Arrivée aux États-Unis en 1954, Carmel Quinn faillit renoncer à chanter à New York, de peur de déranger ses voisins. Un professeur de chant lui prête alors son studio, l'entend et l'encourage à participer à Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts : elle remporte le concours en 1955 et devient ensuite pendant six ans une voix familière des émissions de radio et de télévision d'Arthur Godfrey.
