« Folsom Prison Blues » cache un emprunt longtemps resté sans crédit : Johnny Cash s'est largement inspiré de « Crescent City Blues », une chanson de Gordon Jenkins enregistrée par Beverly Mahr en 1953, dont il reprend la mélodie et certains éléments des paroles. Après le succès de la version live enregistrée à la prison de Folsom en 1968, Jenkins engage une action en justice et l'affaire se règle finalement à l'amiable pour environ 75 000 dollars.
